Eine Vielzahl von Kleinspendern haben den Wahlkampf des demokratischen Bewerbers Bernie Sanders finanziert. Rund eine Million dieser Spender sorgten für zwei Drittel der Gesamteinkünfte der Sanders-Kampagne, wie aus einer Studie der Los Angeles Times hervorgeht. Von den rund 209 Millionen Dollar Spenden, über die der Senator und sein Team verfügen konnte, stammt demnach mehr als jeder vierte Dollar von einem arbeitslosen Spender, wozu die Los Angeles Times auch Rentner gezählt hat.
Die durchschnittliche Spende für Sanders betrug 96 Dollar pro Person – von den Unterstützern typischerweise in mehreren Schüben gezahlt. Der Anteil der Wall Street-Unternehmen machten der Studie zufolge nur etwa 2 Prozent aus.
Hillary Clinton hingegen erhielt den Großteil ihrer privaten Einkünfte aus der Finanzbranche. Allein zwischen 2013 und 2015 soll sie Rede-Honorare von insgesamt fast 22 Millionen Dollar erhalten haben.
